MINNESOTA
Many of the courses on this tour have followed
suit, working hard and smart for the
tightly protected golf consumer dollar. The
competition has made for better conditioning,
challenges, amenities and deals. And
the choices we golfers have are plentiful just
about anywhere you are in the metro area.
Head up north to Oak Grove and you
can play Refuge Golf Club and feel like you
are much farther up north. The Ponds Golf
Course in St. Francis and Tanners Brook in
Forest Lake are still technically in the metro
area, but the sense of " The Cities " starts to
fade away as you tee it up there.
The southern metro is home to some of
the metro's more exciting tracks. The Wilds
Golf Club in Prior Lake features immense
elevation changes, and Stonebrooke Golf
Club's hole No. 8 includes a ferry ride across
Lake O'Dowd in Shakopee. At StoneRidge
Golf Club out east, you will fi nd the famous
Barn Hole, while Rush Creek Golf Club offers
gorgeous natural vistas out west.
My frequent golfi ng partner lives in the
southern part of the Twin Cities, while I
am based on the north side. So, we alternate
" hosting " our weekly grudge match
near our own home soil. We have played
at Loggers Trail, Stonebrooke, Fox Hollow,
Prestwick, Eagle Valley, Rush Creek, Tanners
Brook and Pheasant Acres-and we
haven't come close to exhausting the number
of great golf opportunities that remain.
We will continue our discovery of the great
daily fees in the Twin Cities-you could say
we are spoiled with all the choices we have.

It's a good time to be
a beer lover, especially
if you live in the Twin
Cities metro area. The
frequency of craft beer
breweries opening in
the metro area (and
throughout the state)
over the past few years
can only be compared
to the golf boom of
decades past. A recent
count puts the number
at 50 craft breweries in
the greater metro area
(with more preparing to
open this year).
The bottom line is
that if you come off
any metro golf course
(shown in the map at
right), you won't go
home thirsty. After settling
up wagers at your
course's 19th hole, you
won't have to drive far
to fi nd a freshly brewed
IPA, porter or stout to
help soothe the sting
of that double bogey at
the last. The choices-
just like the selection
of great daily fee golf
courses-are abundant,
and right now, the
booming craft beer business
doesn't appear to
be abating.
