U.S. Senior Women's Open
University of Minnesota women's golf
coach Michele Redman birdied
three of the fi nal eight holes to fi nish
T-4 at the U.S. Senior Women's
Open, May 19 at Pine Needles
Lodge and Golf Club in Southern
Pines, N.C. Pausing from her coaching
duties, Redman carded scores of 77-7272-68
(for 289, 5 over par), four strokes
behind champ Helen Alfredsson. Despite
having some rust on her game, she said
good ball striking was the key to her fi nish.
" I was really happy with the way I hit
the ball, " Redman said. " I hit it in the right
spots. I hit the ball the last three rounds
better than I have the last two years. "
Redman, who has been competing
on the LPGA Tour for more
than 20 years and has two career
wins, earned $43,885 and bested
fellow local golfers Barbara Moxness
(291, T-7) and Marilyn
Lovander (313, T-44). Five
other Minnesota golfers
missed the cut.

16: From sunup to sundown,
" hikers " will play 100 holes
of golf around the country,
earning donations for every
hole played to raise funds for
the Youth on Course program.
More than 80 courses
in Minnesota participate in
the YoC program, where kids
play golf for $5 or less, and
these subsidized rounds are
funded by donations as well
as proceeds from sales of
the Minnesota Golf License
Plate. The MGA is organizing
a Hundred Hole Hike at the
Lafayette Club in Minnetonka
Beach Sept. 16. You can help

PGA Championship
Another Gopher golfer making noise in
a major is Erik van Rooyen, who posted
70-68-70-73-281, May 19 at Bethpage
Black during the PGA Championship. The former U of M
Gopher from South Africa battled the likes of eventual winner
Brooks Koepka and many of the best golfers in the world
to fi nish T-8-and $264,395 richer.
Van Rooyen, who won the 2012 Minnesota State Amateur,
is currently a member of the European Tour. He was playing
in his second major championship (fi nishing T-17 in the 2018
Open Championship) and now has recorded his fi rst top-10
fi nish in a major.
