TIPS FROM THE PROS Swing Balance Take a baseball tip to perform this drill for balance and increased swing speed. I was watching a Twins game a number of years ago and remember former pitcher Bert Blyleven talking about a pitcher's balance point. He was referring to the weight being balanced on the back leg before they pushed off the rubber and began their motion toward the plate. Can that be relatable to the golf swing? It's very important to feel when the backswing is completed in order to smoothly transition to the downswing. In baseball, the pitcher, and sometimes the batter, will lift their front foot off the ground and step into their throw and swing. Golfers don't have that luxury, but as a drill, allow that to happen to feel your balance point before you plant your front foot. The better you sequence that " step and swing, " the more speed you can create. * BY MIKE BARGE * Mike Barge is the Director of Instruction at Hazeltine National GC and a Class A member of the PGA of America. 10 MINNESOTAGOLFER Summer 2023 mngolf.org PHOTO: MATT SEEFELDThttp://www.mngolf.org
