Added to
the National
Register
of Historic
Places

iawatha GC was added to the
National Register of Historic
Places on April 27, joining four other
golf courses in the U.S.-and the first in
Minnesota-listed that are significant
to the history of African American golf,
including Shinnecock Hills Golf Club.
According to their website, the National
Register of Historic Places (NRHP) aims
to support public and private efforts to
identify, evaluate and protect America's
historic and archeological resources.
Darwin Dean, the president of the
Bronze Foundation, said about the meaning
of Hiawatha to the community,
" Today our youth can walk and play golf
where Solomon Hughes, Joe Louis and
Tiger Woods walked...They can have
the same opportunities to learn and play
the great game of golf on a championship
course that has 18 holes instead of 9
holes...We need to preserve our past for
our community and the youth of today! "
In September 2022, the Minneapolis Park
& Recreation Board approved the Hiawatha
Master Plan which plans to take the course
from 18 holes to 9 holes with reduced
groundwater pumping, improved ecology
and water management, and expanded
trails and recreation opportunities. The
project will cost roughly $43 million.
With Hiawatha being included on the
NRHP, the NRHP will have a spot at the
table when discussing future plans for
the property, but with it being publicly
owned, there is no way to dictate future
use of the land.

Principals of the new Tepetonka Club
golf destination
scheduled
to
open
in New London, Minnesota, in 2025
announced the addition of a big name to
their design team. Jim Nantz, the longtime
CBS Sports broadcaster and TV host
of the Masters Tournament at Augusta
National, joins the golf design team of
OCM Golf-including its three partners
Geoff Ogilvy, Mike Cocking and
Ashley Mead-and the architecture firm
Douglas Fredrikson Architects tapped to
create Tepetonka. Nantz, who harbors a
great interest in short course design, will
consult on The Prox, Tepetonka's ninehole
short course.
" After meeting with my old friend a
few times, Jim said he wanted to become
a member, and I asked if he might be

interested in a deeper
involvement, "
says Tepetonka Club chairman Mark
Haugejorde in a press release. Haugejorde
is a former University of Houston golf
teammate of Nantz's and is excited to
bring him on board the project.
" Jim personifies the three guiding
principles of Tepetonka:
camaraderie,
community and charity. And given the
decades he's spent calling tournaments at
courses that include some of the world's
best par 3s, and the level of attention to
detail he brings in all things he does,
we know he'll add his experience onsite
with OCM. "
In August, Nantz is scheduled to join
the team at The Prox (which will be integrated
into Tepetonka's practice area)
to present the entire master plan for
golf, lodging and a supper club to the
Tepetonka members. Course construction
is slated to begin in the fall of 2023,
with an expected opening in early summer
2025.
