Amateur News
In 1922, the Senior Amateur Championship was inaugurated as an invitational
hosted by Somerset CC, and Woodhill's Frank T. Heffelfinger
posted an 85-81-166 to beat Town & Country's F.L. Beckley. The MGA
assumed administration for this historic championship in 1987. A change
to the qualifying process is new this year. Namely, three qualifying events
(for non-exempt players) will replace a lottery system used previously. The
qualifiers are: Wapicada GC, August 6; Tianna CC, August 7; and Heritage
Links, August 14. Registration closes July 22. The championship returns to
Edina Country Club for the third time, September 9-11.
Bloomington Native Ben Polland Wins
PGA Professional Championship
On April 30, Ben Polland, a graduate of
Bloomington Jefferson High School and director
of golf at Shooting Star in Jackson Hole,
Wyoming, shot a final round 4-over-par 76
to win the PGA Professional Championship
at Fields Ranch East at PGA Frisco, Texas.
This landed him a spot into the 2024 PGA
Championship played May 16-20 at Valhalla
Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky.
The Loop
Benjamin Warren, golf course architect, and Tim Anderson, founder of
Barrier Free Golf, assist Tanelle Bolt, a para-athlete from Vancouver, British
Columbia, in the ribbon-cutting ceremony at the grand opening of The
Loop at Chaska on May 5. Anderson, whose vision for The Loop was 13
years in the making, founded Barrier Free Golf to work with golf courses
and municipalities to create access pathways to fun golf and develop a
model for growth and sustainability that can be replicated across the
country. Bolt had the honor of hitting the opening tee shot at the innovative
nine-hole facility in front of friends and local dignitaries.

Frankie Capan Shoots 58
on Korn Ferry Tour
Frankie Capan, 2020 Minnesota State Amateur
champion, shot a 13-under-par 58 (29-29) on
April 25 during the first round of the Korn Ferry
Tour's Veritex Bank Championship at Texas
Rangers Golf Club in Arlington, Texas. The 58
broke the previous course record of 59 held by
the No. 1 golfer in the world, Scottie Scheffler.
