It has been an honor
to be president of the MGA for the last two years. My tenure in
office was definitely unique, but the MGA adapted, adjusted and
flourished despite the challenges the Covid pandemic created.
I thank the Board of Directors and staff of the MGA for their
dedicated work and support. Players, golf courses and their
employees really rallied to find ways to make golf a bright spot
during some very difficult days.
Additionally, may I extend my awe and appreciation of the
countless volunteers among golf enthusiasts in Minnesota-your
efforts are at the core of our success. I extend my thanks to all
whom I was privileged to meet and a sincere thank you to those
I did not have the opportunity to work alongside.
As I reflect on my many years in golf, I am continually
reminded of the value of golf courses to the greater community.
Whether the golf course is public or private, it is green space.
In most communities, the golf course serves as its largest " rain
garden. " Golf courses protect and conserve trees, wetlands
and natural habitats; golf course superintendents use science to
ecologically protect and preserve the land and water within its
boundaries; and golf clubs are also often the hub of social activity
in the communities they serve. Restaurant service, weddings,
youth sports, athletic events, retail and banquet space are a few
of the amenities and recreational activities a golf club brings to its
locality. Most importantly, golf courses are a place to gather with
family and friends, and undoubtedly, many a lasting friendship
has been forged on the links or in the clubhouse.
I conclude my last column by again showcasing the value
of the MN Golf license plate. The $30 fee supports and funds
golf in schools, rounds for veterans, junior golf, MN Youth on
Course and local chapters of the First Tee. All the revenue from
each plate purchased is returned to the game in Minnesota.
