CONVENTION HANDBOOK: GET CULTURAL
istrict 4 has successfully incorporated
cultural activities
into its district convention for
the past decade, and those in the know
say the surest way to fill up the classes
is to offer cooking or folk dancing, but
any cultural activity will do.
District 4 has been offering four to
five cultural classes at each convention
since 2000. The courses typically
commence following the last business
session on Saturday and run just prior
to the Saturday-night banquet. " Our
district cultural director determines
which classes to put on and then finds
instructors to teach the classes, " says
Sharon Tandberg, Normanden 4-424,
Missoula, Mont. To cover the cost of
supplies and offer instructors a small
stipend, District 4 adds a $5 fee on
top of the registration cost.
" We get a good response, " says
Tandberg. " The delegates get a taste
of the skill, whether it's rosemaling
or woodcarving, and the classes add
flavor to the convention. " Too often,
she says, new delegates arrive at a
convention hoping to find Norwegian
activities-when most often it's
all business.
Martha Elliott, publicity and cultural
director for District 4, recommends
that districts hoping to add cultural
activities check with host lodges to
see what type of local talent they offer.
" Or, find out who is coming to the
convention and what their skills are, "
Elliott says. Drawing on local talent to
teach courses saves money and widens
class options. At the 2008 District 4
convention held in Grand Forks, N.D.,
hosting lodge Gyda-Varden 4-021 held
rosemaling and chip carving courses.

" People join Sons of Norway
for different reasons, "
says Elaine Nelson, international
director for District
4. " Some join to get Viking
magazine. Some join for the
cultural classes. Cultural activities
are very important. "
There is no reason not to
incorporate cultural activities
into downtime during
the convention or in the days
preceding the event. People
have already made the trip, and lighthearted
Cultural Skills courses complement
the business-like atmosphere.
Nelson and Elliott say that folk
dancing and cooking are two of the
most popular courses their district has
offered, but variety is also key: " We
have to give people that reason to
keep them as a member. If they join
Sons of Norway to learn Norwegian,
we have to offer that, " adds Nelson.
Offering Cultural Skills units to delegates
has an added trickle-down benefit-delegates
return to their home
lodges with newfound skills they can
pass on to others. V
