s soon as guests opened the
invitation to Sarah Gerber
and Dave Hubbard's June
13 wedding in Ontario, Wis., they
knew it would be a unique celebration-from
the rosemaled design
to the note Sarah included asking
guests to be a part of the special day
by honoring their own traditions.
" In the invitations, we said
we wanted to celebrate lots
of different traditions and
backgrounds, " Sarah says. " We
invited our guests to wear traditional
costumes. "
Several guests-including the
bride's mother-arrived in Norwegian
bunads. Others simply accented
their American garb with traditional
sølje jewelry.
" We had a lot of people that were
excited to come because it was different, "
Sarah says.
Indeed, from the ceremony
through the reception, Dave and
Sarah planned an event that departed
from a typical Wisconsin wedding
and honored their Norwegian heritage
at every turn.
Sarah wore a white wedding dress
in the chapel, and she, her groom
and the attendants sat down during
the ceremony-a common practice
in Norwegian weddings.
After the ceremony, Sarah
changed into her authentic Hardanger
bunad and a wedding crown
rented from the Mt. Horeb Norwegian
Shop. She completed the look

with an heirloom sølje
brooch on loan from
Dave's grandmother.
" That was such a special thing to
be able to wear something from his
family, from his Norwegian roots,
and incorporate that into my wedding
bunad, " the bride says.
The happy couple boarded a
buggy pulled by fjord horses and
was escorted to the reception at
Norskedalen Nature and Heritage
Center in Coon Valley, Wis., by a
Norwegian Hardanger fiddler.
At the reception, guests enjoyed
a Scandinavian feast that included
meatballs, mashed potatoes, lefse
and, of course, kransekake, Norwegian
wedding cake. They were also
treated to entertainment by Sons of
Norway dancers from Wergeland
5-28 in La Crosse.
" Sarah had an amazing day
planned, " Dave says. Her family
helped, and my family helped, and it
