" It was incredibly difficult
during the first few
months of school, " Dack
says. " I would write down
every word I didn't understand
in my notebook and
would look them up each night
in the dictionary. "
Learning Norwegian in class
and speaking it solely with his
Norwegian friends helped him acclimate
to the language, Dack says.
" By Christmastime, I could
communicate like a 6-year-old, "
Dack says. " Now, I'm fluent and
seem to fool most people that
I'm actually American. "
Learning Norwegian was
one of the benefits of attending
a folk school and being
immersed in the culture, but
Grinde says she also learned
more than she expected about
herself: to be independent and
have an open mind about the
world around her.
" I became more open minded
and willing to do things out of
my comfort zone, " Grinde says.
Because of her experiences
in Norway, Grinde learned to
appreciate nature, to enjoy being
outside and to value the simple
things in life. She says she also
gained a new appreciation for
her Norwegian background.
" It made me realize the importance
of your roots. " Grinde said.
" It makes me want to share that
with my kids one day, "
She embraced a different
path, but one that she says was
right for her.
" When someone tells me
they are interested in folk
schools, I tell them not to be
afraid to try something out,
because most likely they'll
enjoy it, " Grinde says. " When
you are young and can travel,
it's one of the most important
things you can do. "
