from Norway to North
America, primarily to the United
States. In the early years of immigration,
" they were encouraged
to leave by diffi cult economic
and social conditions, coupled
with an irrepressible faith in the
opportunities for a better life in
a different part of the world, "

A restless soul, Cleng Peerson was
born in 1783 near Tysvær in the county
of Rogaland. He has been called
" the father of emigration, " " the pathfi
nder " and " Peer Gynt of the Prairie. "
He earned his many titles by making
multiple journeys back and forth
across the Atlantic starting in 1821
when a group of Quakers hired him to
fi nd an American destination suitable
for settlement. Peerson returned to
Norway to report his fi ndings, then
quickly headed back to America to
prepare for the arrival of some of the
fi rst Norwegian immigrants to the
colonies. When the Sloopers, as they
were called, landed in 1825 aboard the
ship Restaurationen, Peerson was waiting
to take them to their new home in
northern New York.

Not content to settle down, Peerson
set out again on foot in the mid
1830s. " He just walked west, " says
Terje Leiren, Sverre Arestad endowed
professor in Norwegian studies at the
University of Washington. " He found
this area to the west of Chicago on
the Fox River, where they settle down.
That became the fi rst Midwest settlement
that is specifi cally Norwegian.
The whole presence of Norwegians
in the northern Illinois, southern
Wisconsin and Minnesota area was a
result of Peerson's recommendations. "
Ever the wanderer, Peerson left
Fox River Valley in 1853 and led a
small contingent from the settlement
to Bosque County, Texas. Peerson
died in Texas in 1865 at the age
of 83, and he was buried at Norse
Cemetery in Bosque County. The
inscription on his gravestone offers
another title: " The fi rst Norwegian
immigrant in America. "
