Fred Kavli's entrepreneurial
spirit emerged early in life.
As a teenager in Germanoccupied
Norway, Kavli and
his brother made and sold
wood pellet fuel for cars.
He used the profi ts to fund
his education in physics at
the Norwegian Institute of
Technology in Trondheim. Three days after graduation, Kavli boarded a ship
bound for Canada; the following year he arrived in California, where he again
put his entrepreneurial skills to use. In 1958, he founded Kavlico, a manufacturer
of sensors for the transportation and aerospace industries.
In 2000, Kavli sold his company for nearly $350 million and launched the
Kavli Foundation, a philanthropic venture " dedicated to advancing science for
the benefi t of humanity, promoting public understanding of science and the
role of scientifi c research, and supporting scientists and their work. " In addition
to providing grant money and research opportunities in the sciences, the
Kavli Foundation awards $1 million prizes for scientifi c advances in astrophysics,
nanoscience and neuroscience. " It's admirable that he's wanted to take this
fortune that he made through is entrepreneurship and turn it into furthering what
I would say are the frontiers of science, " Zempel says.

When it comes to documenting the
Norwegian-American experience,
scholars and amateur history buffs
alike look to the work of Odd Lovoll.
" He is one of the most important
historians of immigration in the United
States, and I think he is the single most
important historian of NorwegianAmerican
history, " Leiren says.
Lovoll was born in Sande and immigrated
to the Seattle area at age 12. In
1952, he traveled to Norway to study and
teach, but returned to the states 15 years
later. He taught history at St. Olaf College
in Northfi eld, Minn., for 30 years. Along
with his scholarship,
Lovoll acted as editor
for the NorwegianAmerican
Historical
Association, where he
encouraged others to
do scholarly work in the
area of immigration.
In his books, including
The Promise of America and The Promise
Fulfi lled, Lovoll presents the whole
Norwegian-American experience-from
the fi rst wave to the modern day-in a
way that even non-historians can appreciate.

in Norwegian-American history or even
a specialist in history in order to read,
understand, enjoy and get something out
of his books, " Zempel says.
