s the coordinator of
international education
at the Royal Norwegian
Consulate General in New
York, Sara Ullerø promotes
study abroad opportunities
between Norway and North
America and the cooperation
opportunities between universities.
Before joining the team, the
Oslo native previously worked
at the Fulbright Foundation
as the Norwegian program
coordinator. Now, she's living in
the Big Apple helping students
explore their study abroad options.
Viking spoke with Ullerø
about her position and tips for
educational exchanges.

; My job is partly sponsored
by the Norwegian Ministry
of Foreign Affairs and by the
Norwegian Ministry of Education
and Research Cooperation. I try
to implement the North American
strategy of Ministry of Higher Education
here in the United States.
They want to increase the number
of agreements in the United
States, Canada and Norway. I
attend conferences, travel to the
universities and represent Norway
in a good way. The other part of
my job is coordinating that role
with the day-to-day work at the

Consulate. I'm really enjoying
the position. It's a nice offi ce, and
New York is a great city to live in.
This is my fi rst time living in the
United States.

; The Norwegian coordinator
takes care of all the Norwegian
grantees: the application process,
coordinating interviews, the
nomination process and sending
people abroad afterwards. Recipients
choose their own universities,
but the Fulbright offi ce takes care
of their visa and helps them get
ready for the big departure.

A; It's one of the most important
things about education because
it's not only about learning your
fi eld of study, but also learning
about other cultures.

; When I worked at the Fulbright
Foundation in Norway,
I mostly advised students who
already wanted to go the United
States. When they weren't sure
what school to go to, we would
help them. Do you want to go to
hdchd[cdglVn#Xdb
a big or small
school? Is there
a fi eld that you
are interested
in? Which
school is known
for being good
at that fi eld?
Doing research ahead of time is
really important. Talk to people
who have been there and who
have the same interest as you. If
you want to work with certain
researchers or professors, know
where they are located.

; The number of Norwegian
students to the United States
has grown the last couple of
years, which is a good trend.
It went drastically down a few
years back. The North American
strategy was implemented
in order to change that trend.
The fi rst strategy was launched
in 2008, and seeing that the
numbers of Norwegian students
to the United States started
increasing again, a new strategy
was implemented for 20122015.
We've seen good progress.
Last year, we launched
a new strategy to focus more
on Canada. We want more
students going back and forth
between Canada.
