Norway members, and researching where a greatgrandfather
lived or when a grandmother emigrated
can provide answers to genealogical mysteries. But ancestry can
also raise concerns when it comes to health. People of Nordic
descent can inherit genetic conditions that limit movement in
the hand, increase the risk for breast and ovarian cancer and
cause the body to absorb too much iron. If these conditions
run in your family, recognizing the symptoms can lead to early
diagnosis and improved treatment.

Children have their passports stamped
and bags inspected by the customs
agent, who speaks no English. Next,
they exchange their American dollars for
Norwegian kroner so they can purchase
melkesjokolade and brus at the nearby
kiosk. Snacking on godteri while they
unpack, they will later enjoy a meal of
kjøttboller og poteter. This scenario-not
in Norway but in northern Minnesota-
has taken place thousands of times over
the past 50 summers as participants arrive
at Skogfjorden, Concordia College's
Norwegian Language Village.
It all started in 1960, when Concordia
College Professor Gerhard Haukebo
approached college administrators with
the novel idea of creating an immersion
program to teach foreign language. The
idea was born on a fishing trip with
his colleague, Erhard Friedrichsmeyer.
Having worked as a principal in Germany,
Haukebo was intrigued with
how American students acquired the
foreign language of their host country,
and he observed the progress made when
students were immersed in the language.
" That's when it occurred to me: Can't we
create an immersion experience here? "
Haukebo says. Camp Waldsee, a twoweek
German immersion program, was
launched in the summer of 1961, with
Friedrichsmeyer serving as dean.
From the beginning, Haukebo and
Friedrichsmeyer had more than language
acquisition in mind for participants.
They hoped to " develop some
kind of notion about cultural differences,
so that students could be a little
more appreciative of things done other
ways, " Haukebo says.
Camp Waldsee was a success, and the
following year Concordia added a French
program. Interest from the NorwegianAmerican
community soon led to a camp
of its own, and in the summer of 1963,
19 campers gathered at Camp Trowbridge
for the first Norwegian language
camp. " It was awfully well done. I just
felt so good about what the kids were
getting there, " Haukebo says.
Robb Mitchell, whose father assisted
Haukebo and others in fundraising for
the camps, was an early Skogfjorden
camper. As a 7-year-old, he had " no idea
it was a language camp and that there
would be instruction in Norwegian. I
was pretty vague on the whole idea of
what 'Norwegian' meant, to be honest, "
Mitchell says. Despite his initial culture
shock, Mitchell's early Skogfjorden experiences
broadened his perspective. " Everything
was different, " he says. " Being
surrounded by all the little details-from
using Norwegian kroner, to marzipan
pigs, to the red gummy fish-added to
the intrigue. " The authentic Norwegian
cuisine made an impression on Mitchell.
" At my age in the 1960s you just
assumed everybody in the world ate fish
sticks and mac-and-cheese, " he says.
