ROADSIDE ODDITY

Sorrisniva Igloo Hotel
n artifi cial leg with a solid wood
foot hangs on a cedar wall in one
of eight outbuildings at Tom's Logging
Camp near Two Harbors, Minn. Nestled in
balsam and spruce along scenic Highway
61 near the shore of Lake Superior, the
camp has provided a rich history of logging
since the late 1950s.
Current owners are unaware of when or
how the leg was acquired, but a short informative
white placard, long mounted on the
wall, identifi es the leg as having belonged to
Gabriel Peterson, who emigrated from Norway
in 1912 and worked in a logging
camp in Frankfort, Mich.
Several of Peterson's brothers
left the farm in Risnes in VestAgder
in 1907 bound for Frankfort
to work in the timber industry. As

Twenty-four snow suites are decorated
to refl ect themes from arctic culture and
nature. The lighted ice sculptures and ice
bar are constructed with 15 tons of ice,
which comes from the frozen lake next to
the hotel. After a day of king crab fi shing,
snowmobiling and snowshoeing, warm up

Sorrisniva Igloo Hotel
Alta, Norway
Open January through April
Set on the banks of the Alta river, the Sorrisniva
Igloo Hotel is made completely of ice.
At night, reindeer hides keep guests warm
in their ice beds. During the day, visitors
can enjoy the beauty of frozen fjords on a
snowmobile safari or dog sledding excursion.
Guests can cap off the day with a visit
to the ice bar. How about a cool wedding in

loggers, they commonly faced dangers,
from saw blades cutting fi ngers off to errant
logs crushing limbs. Soon after arriving in
Frankfort, 26-year-old Peterson suffered a
broken ankle when a load of logs collapsed
on him. The placard states, " Due to neglect
gangrene set in and the leg was lost-the
operation taking place on a pool table. "
Peterson's 1918 WWI
draft registration card
described him as " medium
height and build,
blue eyes and light hair
color " and as missing his
left leg. Census records
indicate that he farmed
for many years with his
bachelor brother, Hans,
in Koochiching County,
Minn. Peterson remained
a bachelor until his death
at the age of 85 in 1971.
