The Oslo Opera House is the
city's new landmark, boasting
the International Architecture
Award in 2010. The main
auditorium is one of the most
technologically advanced in the
world. With its sloping white
marble roof rising directly
out of the fjord and balconies
carved by Norwegian boat
builders, it's a piece of art in
itself and hugely popular for a
leisure walk with a view.
Kvadraturen offers some of
Oslo´s oldest buildings, some
dating as far back as 1600, and
today is home to galleries, cafés
and popular restaurants. Try
Stortorvets Gjæstgiveri (since
1700) or Engebret Café (since
1857) for lutefi sk and beer.
Barcode is the new fi nancial
district in high-tech urban
futuristic architecture. Cross
the award-winning Akrobaten
bridge over rail lines to Maaemo
restaurant. Taste their two

Michelin-starred menus, serving
new Norwegian cuisine; organic,
wild and very experimental.
The Medieval Park ruins of
St. Mary's Church and the fi rst
royal fort in Oslo, built by King
Haakon V in the 11th century,
are a great destination for all
ages. Oyafestivalen, a popular
boutique music festival, is held
every August and features
world-renowned artists and
young Norwegian chefs.
Ekebergåsen, a neighborhood
of rolling green hills to
the east of Bjørvika, offers a
new sculpture park, Norway
Cup for young soccer players
and the location where
Edvard Munch painted " The
Scream. " Ekeberg Restaurant
is recommended hilltop dining
with contemporary cuisine in
one of Oslo's most beautiful
and functional buildings.
Herligheten (The Glory) is an
ecological initiative and urban
food production project begun
in April 2012 and slated to run
for three years. One hundred
garden plots are available for
rent, and the project offers
programming that includes
events and seminars on urban
gardening. Gardeners also have
access to a large fi eld where
several types of ancient grain
such as spelt, emmer and
einkorn (both varieties of wheat),
and barley can be cultivated.
Ekebergåsen
Slow Space is a program of
public art projects, events and
publications set to unfold over
the next four years. The program
challenges preconceptions
about the forms and timespan
of conventional public artworks
and promises a new approach
to working with artists in
sites of regeneration. Slow
Space is a collective activity
and collaborates with existing
organiz ations and artist-run
initiatives across the city.
