A Conference for All: Getting Results
This August Sons of Norway will be hosting the second biennial Innovative
Leadership Conference in Jacksonville, Fla., as part of the International
Convention. This event is dedicated to getting results by strengthening the
leadership skills of all Sons of Norway members.

Leadership Conference being held on
Aug. 20, 2014 in Jacksonville, Fla.
During this one-day event, attendees
will be led through four educational
modules designed to help members
strengthen their leadership skills.
Sons of Norway has enlisted the help
of Kit Welchlin, a professional speaker
and leadership expert. Welchlin has
a long history in leadership, having
purchased his first company at the age
of 21 and by 26 served as the CEO and
chairman of the board of three manufacturing
companies in three states. He
has also been an instructor for more
than 20 years with the Minnesota State
Colleges and Universities where he has
been repeatedly nominated as Outstanding
Faculty. Viking recently sat
down with him to discuss the upcoming
Innovative Leadership Conference.

Q What are your areas of expertise
that you plan to bring to the Innovative
Leadership Conference?
A I will be sharing leadership and
communication concepts, teamwork
techniques, conflict resolution strategies
and decision-making methods that will
support membership recruitment and
membership retention. I will provide
information and insight that will
energize attendees to improve personal
and professional performance. Above
all, I always want participants to think,
" Hey, I can do that. "
Q What can ILC attendees expect
from your presentations?
A Results. I am a high-content
speaker. These fast-paced sessions will
be packed with useful information.
The sessions will be sprinkled with
discussion questions, exercises and
group activities to ensure follow
through when attendees return home
to their careers and lodges. There
will be checklists, action items and
handouts to refer to long after the
conference is over.
Kit Welchlin will share his leadership expertise
to help attendees increase recruitment, engage
new members, strengthen collaboration within
the lodge and more.
The cost of this year's Innovative Leadership Conference

Q To give our members some
insight into what they will learn at
this year's ILC, what do you think is
the key to working successfully in a
group setting?
A I believe the key to working in a
group setting is to build and maintain
a supportive communication climate.
Patience is the foundation. Everyone
wants to be heard, understood and
accepted. It is critical that each member
of the team feels respected by other
team members, and that his or her
opinions and suggestions will be valued.
It is important that each team member
walks away from conversations and
meetings with a clear understanding
of exactly what was discussed and
accomplished or assigned.
Over the next few months Viking
will highlight all the topics that will be
covered at this year's ILC and will share
ideas about how they can benefit members,
lodges and districts alike.
