Trumpet Virtuoso
As the leading trumpet player of her generation, Tine Thing
Helseth has taken the international music scene by storm.

orwegian Tine Thing
Helseth started
playing trumpet at
7 years old. She studied music
at the Barratt Due Institute
of Music and the Norwegian
Academy of Music. Now
26, she's at the height of her
critically-acclaimed music
career. She performs both as
a soloist and in concert with
the world's best symphonic
orchestras. In 2007, she formed
the all-female brass ensemble,
tenThing. Helseth's next
album is due out in 2015. She's
currently on tour in the United
States, with stops in Texas and
Philadelphia in May. Catch the
Tine@Munch Music Festival
June 12-14 at the Edvard
Munch Museum in Oslo.
Q Do you prefer performing
as a soloist or as part of an
ensemble?
A I enjoy both! I am fi rst and
foremost a musician. No
matter if I'm playing with a
huge orchestra or with one
other person, it's all about
music. I need different
elements in my career to make
it interesting.
Q What are some of your
favorite career highlights?
A My fi rst time in Carnegie

Hall was very special, and so
was performing at the BBC
Proms in the Royal Albert Hall
in London. Last year, I started
my own festival in Oslo, called
Tine@Munch. All the concerts
take place in the Edvard
Munch Museum in Oslo.
My musician friends played
last year, including Leif Ove
Andsnes, Truls Mørk, Nicola
Benedetti and Charlie Siem. It
was a dream come true, and I
can't wait for this year's festival
in June.
Q Who are some musicians
you admire?
A There are so many! Renée
Fleming, Leif Ove Andsnes,
Joni Mitchell, Taylor Swift,
Janine Jansen, Nina Simone,
Laura Mvula and Ólafur
Arnalds are on my iPod
right now.
Q How did you start your
brass ensemble tenThing?
A It's 10 girls, and we're great
friends. It started as something
we did just for fun. When we
performed at the BBC Proms
last summer, I got really
emotional before we went on
stage because it is so special
to get to experience that with
your best friends. We have
four projects a year, which
are always very intense but
most of all incredibly fun.
This year, we play in Russia,
Germany and Switzerland.
Q What's it like touring the
world, and what are some of
your favorite destinations
to visit?
A Being on the road is a
strange lifestyle, but I really
like it. London, Berlin, New
York, Vienna and Hong Kong
will always have a special
place in my heart. Music is a
universal language, and it's a
privilege to really get to play
around the world. You can
communicate with people
across language barriers
and borders.
Q What are your plans
for 2014?
A: I'll be touring the United
States and Europe this year.
I'm in the process of recording
my next album, which will be
released in 2015.
