Drømmer om en hvit jul = Dreaming of a White Christmas
Norway to Launch World's First Arctic Whiskey
Roar Larsen, chief scientist at
Trondheim's Sintef Institute, stumbled
upon a unique opportunity when he
and his family of fi ve sailed toward
Myken Island to visit some friends,
and a storm left them stranded on
the island for fi ve days. Located just
north of the Arctic Circle in Northern
Norway, Myken, once a thriving fi shing
town, was suffering as a community
with only six permanent residents.
Smitten with the scenic style of living
on the rocky isle, Larsen and his wife
(along with four business partners)
dreamed of bringing Myken back to
its heyday. The answer, they agreed,
was a small-batch whiskey distillery.
Myken Whiskey uses desalinated
seawater from Vestfjorden to produce
the world's fi rst Arctic spirit of its kind,
a concept the team hopes will prove
good for business and for tourism.
Once the whiskey has been aged-a
process that takes three years-and
production is in full swing, Myken will
become home to the entrepreneurs.
Life at Christmas

do not remember a Christmas tree without my
bisque girl sitting in her swing, " wrote 79-year-old
Peg LeFebvre in the " Tampa Bay Times. " The cherished
3-inch ornament from 1896 was brought to the United
States by her Norwegian grandmother. For LeFebvre and
other Norwegian-Americans, holiday ornaments offer an
opportunity to share family heritage across generations.
In December 2013, the Norwegian Embassy in
Washington, D.C., tapped into those memories by posting
this question on its Facebook page, " How do you decorate
your Christmas tree? " The responses varied, of course. Some
people hung family heirlooms such as hand-crocheted stars
or rosemaled stockings. Others adorned
the conifers with Norwegian-inspired
ornaments made of straw or curled shaved
wood strips. One common thread among
those who responded was decorating their
trees with Norwegian fl ags.
One contributor, Shawn Carlson, extends
the holiday spirit over the entire year,
" Because we love the spirit of Christmas, we
keep an artifi cial tree up in our living room
all year-round and then decorate it for every
holiday including May 17th! "
Marcia Comer added, " One of the best things about
decorating the tree is unpacking the ornaments. Each one has
a story from over the years as we don't have a theme unless
it is 'our life at Christmas.' It is a trip down memory lane
every year remembering the people to whom each ornament
is connected. "
