Abel, a
Poet
Mathematician
was the first person
to formulate and solve
an integral equation.
NIELS HENRIK ABEL
1802-1829
Abel was a trailblazer for modern
mathematics. In fact, he was the first person to formulate and
solve an integral equation. He wrote several noteworthy papers
over the course of his career, tackling subjects such as equation
theory, calculus and theoretical mechanics. Abel's studies
began in Oslo, where he attended the University of Christiania.
During his career, he traveled to Germany and France to
study and collaborate with other prominent mathematicians.
Unfortunately, Abel suffered from tuberculosis, and his health
deteriorated over time. His life was cut short in 1829 at the
young age of 27.
HENRIK WERGELAND
1808-1845
To many Norwegians, Wergeland was more than
a poet. His work was a symbol of democracy,
tolerance and Norway's national identity.
Wergeland supported the constitution of 1814,
but he also worked to eliminate a part of the
document that excluded Jews from the country.
He wrote several poems over the course of his
career. Some of his best-known works are " Jan
van Huysum's Flowerpiece, " " The English Pilot, "
" Creation, Humanity, and Messiah, " " For the
Working Class " and " The Jew. "

Camilla Collett was
the sister of
Norwegian poet
Henrik Wergeland.

CAMILLA COLLETT
1813-1895
Collett was a prominent novelist and women's rights advocate.
Her book " The District Governor's Daughter " boldly addressed
Norway's patriarchal society and gender inequality. While Collett
is known for her memoirs, most of her work focused on the social
and emotional emancipation of women. She influenced several
writers who came after her, including Henrik Ibsen.
Father
of the
Constitution
Falsen played a key role in helping Norway gain independence from Sweden. A
nationalist political leader, he took part in the 1814 gathering in Eidsvoll, where a
group of Norwegians met to create a declaration of independence and determine
what action to take against Sweden. Falsen drafted the important document that
would later become the Norwegian constitution. Later on, he held a seat in the
Storting, Norway's parliament.

Qvam was a major
advocate for women's
rights in Norway.
The wife of politician
Ole Anton Qvam,
she used her husband's contacts to connect
with other prominent politicians of the day. She
founded the Norwegian Women's Public Health
Association and served as its president for more
than three decades. The organization supported
women's health needs and the education of
nurses, but it also had a political purpose.
