EDITOR'S NOTE:
Thank you to everyone who sent in
suggestions for Viking's " Legendary
Norwegians " series, which ran in the
February, March and April issues. Here are
some letters from readers on the subject.
I enjoy the articles in Viking magazine.
As a second generation NorwegianAmerican,
I was especially interested
in the legendary heroes who helped to
shape Norway. My mother's cousin was
married to Simon Slattvik, world class
and Olympic skier. He was a medalist
in the 1952 Olympics, and was the fi rst
to jump over 100 meters. He also was
a great countryman, escaping the Nazis
during World War II with his family on
skis over the mountains into Sweden.

I really appreciated the article about
Legendary Norwegians in the February
2015 issue. I noticed the invitation to
suggest other ideas for the list, so I will
be so bold as to make a suggestion. The
name which has been important to me
for a long time is O. Hallesby. Many
years ago I discovered " Prayer " by
Hallesby and found it to be a valuable
treasure. It seemed such a classic on
the subject that I somehow assumed
Hallesby to be a giant from another
era, so was surprised to learn that he
had been alive during and after World
War II. His opposition to the Nazis
brought on him a couple of years of
confi nement. He was a theologian,
teacher and writer. In my library, I also
have three other books by him, and his
books are still in print.
