Royal Recognition
Meet three Sons of Norway members who have received royal honors for their dedicated service.

of their distinguished services. In the last 25 years, Sons of Norway members John Lund, Liv Dahl and Per Brevig have
all received royal honors for their commitment to preserving Norwegian heritage and culture. To this day, their efforts
continue to serve Norway and the Norwegian communities abroad.

Royal Norwegian Order of Merit
In 2004, former Sons of Norway
CEO John Lund was knighted as a
member of the Order of Merit for his
outstanding service in the interest of
Norway. He received the honor in
Minneapolis, where he has lived all
his life. During a subsequent trip to
Norway, Lund thanked King Harald V
for the recognition.
" We had a great visit, " Lund recalls.
" He was also interested in what was
going on with Sons of Norway. "
Before Lund became CEO, he acted
as attorney for Sons of Norway and

Lund, whose great-grandparents
came from Norway, says learning about
his ancestors brings a sense of identity
and continuity. To him, receiving the
Order of Merit is a reflection of Sons
of Norway and " the great things our
members do throughout the country to
keep Norwegian heritage alive. "
Today, the Sons of Norway
Foundation provides a scholarship
named after Lund and his father, Allan
Lund (also pictured), a Knight of the
Order of St. Olav. " It's something I
believe in, " Lund says of the Lund
Fund, which helps post-secondary
students finance their study abroad
experiences. " The more awareness we
have of the rest of the world, the better
off all of us will be in understanding
one another. "

Royal Medal of St. Olav
Born in Namsos, Norway, Liv Dahl
came to the United States in 1962. After
joining Sons of Norway in 1971, she
realized that people in North America
maintained outdated notions about her
native country.

" I needed to do something to help
update the picture of what Norway is
now, " Dahl says.
In the mid-1970s, Dahl was one of
two co-founders of the Norwegian
American Cultural Institute, an
organization that provided language
and culture classes in the Twin Cities.
