When Sons of Norway started
its Heritage Department in 1983,
Dahl - then director of the NACI -
was invited to establish that department
at Sons of Norway. Once established,
the NACI became part of the Heritage
Department. Later on, she also helped
establish the Cultural Skills Program for
Sons of Norway.
It was for these efforts and more
that in 1996, Dahl was honored with
the Medal of St. Olav, a reward given
to those who have helped advance
knowledge of Norway abroad and
strengthen the bonds between their
country of residence and Norway. Dahl
received the medal in Minneapolis from
the Norwegian Consul General, who
bestowed the honor on behalf of King
Harald V.

America longer than I lived in Norway,
I will always be Norwegian, " Dahl says.
" I think we have so much good to share,
and it is such a privilege to share it. "
to study at Juilliard in New York.
Five years later, he moved back to the
United States for good.
" Talent and hard work are really
appreciated in this country, " says the
world-renowned musician and
conductor. " This is the
land of opportunity; I
have experienced it first
hand. "
Over the years,
Brevig has played as
principal trombonist for
the Metropolitan Opera
Orchestra, conducted more
than 20 operas, and taught
seminars and master classes around
the world.

Applications due: Jan. 15, 2016
This matching funds grant helps
Sons of Norway lodges
celebrate significant events
and provide quality
Norwegian-themed
programs, such as
cultural fairs, hosting
visiting Norwegian
groups and cultural
skills classes.
« General Heritage and
Culture Grants
In 1990, he received the Medal of
St. Olav from the Consul General in
New York. The award was conferred
by King Olav V in recognition of
Brevig's efforts to promote Norwegian
music and culture in the United States.
Such efforts include founding the
Edvard Grieg Society Inc., New York
and exposing American audiences
to Norway's finest musicians and
composers. His wife, Berit Brevig,
received the same honor from King
Harald V in 2008.
" We are passionate about
Norwegians, " Brevig says. " We have
a very strong connection to Norway
through family and art especially. "
More recently, Brevig received the
2014 Leif Erikson Citation Award for
representing Norway " with the highest
quality of artistic output. "

Royal Medal of St. Olav
In 1959, Norwegian-born Per Brevig
took a yearlong leave of absence from
the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra

Awarded to individuals, groups or
organizations that promote the heritage
and culture of traditional or modern Norway.
Examples include music, art and theatre
presentations, hosting visiting groups and
cultural workshops and research projects.
« Helping Hands to Children Grant
Applications due: Feb. 15, 2016
This matching funds grant helps lodges
provide Norwegian-themed programming in
schools and lodges, such as Adopt a School,
Children's Folk Dancing Groups and Heritage
Camps. All applications are done online.
« Helping Hands to Member Grant
Available to current Sons of Norway members
who are displaced from their homes due to
natural disasters, including floods, tornadoes,
hurricanes and wildfires. Contact foundation@
