EDITOR'S NOTE
On page 6 of the December
issue, we featured a story on
the large elk statue made of
polished steel that was unveiled
this fall in Norway's Østerdalen
Valley. Several members have
noted that the correct term that
reflects the image of the statue
is " moose, " rather than " elk. " The
artist, Linda Bakke, refers to the
statue as an elk, but translations
from Norwegian to English can
be confusing, especially in this case when geography plays an important role. For
instance, the Norwegian word elg can be conversationally translated in English to both
the words " moose " and " elk " because the European elk and moose are the
same creature. However, in North America, the word " elk " describes an entirely
different animal.

BOOK CLUB
During the summer of 2010, a small
group of Nordic Pines members and
friends decided to start a book club.
A member offered to lead the group,
and we started a journey. We settled
on books by Scandinavian authors or
books about Scandinavia.
The first summer we got hooked
on Sigrid Undset and read " Kristin
Lavransdatter. " From there we read
two more of her books, " Catherine
of Siena " and " Stages of the Road. "
A bonus for us was that we had an
author in our midst, so we read Don
Lago's " On the Viking Trail " and then
did Jo Nesbø's " The Redbreast. " We
also read " Song of the Vikings: Snorri
and the Making of Norse Myths, "
" The Song of the Lark " by Willa
Cather and " In Cod We Trust " and

" Grace: A Novel " by Linn Ullmann.
This past summer we read " One of
Us: The Story of Anders Breivik and
the Massacre in Norway, " " Boat of
Longing " by Ole Edvart Rølvaag
and " Norwegian by Night " by
Derek B. Miller.
It has been a great mix of books,
some old and some new, some classics
and some lighter fare. I doubt some
of these books would have been read
if not for the group picking them to
read and discuss together. Although
we only meet three or four times a
summer, the time spent together has
been so rewarding. Some of the fun
is just trying to whittle down the list
each spring.
