Suzann Pettersen
Pro golfer Suzann Pettersen - who's ranked as
high as second in the world and currently sits at
12th - has always been athletic. She played in her
first golf tournament when she was just 6 years old,
and turned pro at age 19. Viking talked with the
34-year-old about where she gets her drive, and the
qualities she feels make for a great leader, both on
and off the course.
On her passion for golf: Growing up, Pettersen
spent a lot of time outdoors and participated in
several different sports. Like most Norwegian
kids, she was exposed to skiing and other winter
activities. " Having two older brothers, I followed
in their footsteps as well as I could, " she says. " But
golf caught my attention more than other sports. It
was challenging because you had to utilize several
[different skills]. My competitiveness was also a
solid foundation. I hate to lose! "
On the qualities of a leader: " A great leader is
a person who knows how to dream big, and how
to make the people around him or her better. I
also think it's important to be honest enough with
yourself to know your limitations, and to be strong
enough to bring onboard people who are better
than you are. "
On toughness: Pettersen always chooses to work
with people who are better players or stronger than
she is. When she was young, she enjoyed playing
golf with boys. " They were more aggressive, hit
the ball further than I did and had a
great touch with the short game, "
she says. " Spending time with
them made me tougher. "
On Olympic dreams:
" I would love to win a medal in
the Olympics in Rio. "
Admired Politician: Erna Solberg
Strength, determination and a strong work ethic helped Erna
Solberg become Norway's prime minister and Conservative party
leader. Born in Bergen, Solberg struggled through school and
was diagnosed with dyslexia as a teenager. She enrolled in the
University of Bergen, where she graduated in 1986 with a
Cand. Mag. Degree in Sociology, Political Science, Statistics and
Economy.
Film Legend: Liv Ullmann
Throughout her career, Liv Ullmann has most often been described as
being Swedish director Ingmar Bergman's muse. And it's true, she was.
But describing her as such actually sells her short.
Yes, Ullmann and Bergman have made 11 films together. And yes,
they were in a relationship for five years. But in the 50-plus years
Ullmann has been in the world of performance, she's stood on her own
merits as an actress. In that time, she's been nominated for more than
40 different awards. In recent years, the 77-year-old has shifted the
focus of her career to directing; a move that's also garnered acclaim.
In those directorial efforts, Ullmann has gravitated toward movies
and plays that depict complicated, anguished women. She recently
directed Jessica Chastain in the film " Miss Julie, " and received accolades
in 2009 for directing a theater production of " A Streetcar Named
Desire, " which starred Cate Blanchett.
Outside her success in front of and behind the camera (and theater
curtains), Ullmann has made time for several humanitarian efforts.
She serves as Vice Chair, International, for the International Rescue
Committee, which offers various forms of support to people in more
than 40 countries. She's also a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, an
organization that lauds her for being one of the first " outsiders " to
travel to refugee camps in Democratic Kampuchea (now Cambodia)
in 1979. In the 1980s, she shed light on famine in Ethiopia by being
photographed with children there. Ullmann is also the co-founder and
honorary chair of the Women's Refugee Commission, which protects
the rights of women and children who've been uprooted due to
conflict and crisis.
