egistration is now open for the 2016 Innovative
Leadership Conference! This all day event, which is
being held on August 24 in Tacoma, WA, will bring
together members from throughout the organization to
learn about good leadership. Over the course of the day,
attendees will participate in four educational sessions
about team work, conflict resolution, strategic planning
and mentorship/leadership. Each session will be comprised
of discussion and small group exercises that will provide
participants with useful and implementable leadership
techniques that can be brought back to the lodge.
These discussions and exercises will be led by energetic
speaker and leadership expert, Kit Welchlin. Recently Viking
magazine sat down with him to learn more about what
participants can expect from this year's ILC.
Q Why should elected delegates
and non-delegates, alike, should
attend this year's ILC?
A We will be discussing
teamwork, conflict resolution,
strategic planning, and mentor
leadership. Certainly all of these
concepts would be beneficial
to elected delegates. As for
non-delegates, leadership is not
a title; leadership is action. It
would truly benefit the lodge
overall, and member retention
specifically, to develop the mentor leadership characteristics
we will discuss.

Q In addition to what they learn, what will attendees take
away from the ILC?
A The attendees will walk away with a workbook filled with
strategies and action plans to energize the local lodge and
excite the members.
Q Typically attendees to the ILC get to cover a lot of ground
with regard to the information they receive, how will you keep
it from becoming too overwhelming?
A We will be covering a lot of material. Thankfully it won't
be all lecture all day long. There will be some lecture, small
group discussions, and self-reflection. This will definitely
break things up and make everything easier to follow.
Q What's the most important thing attendees will learn?
A I think one of the important things that attendees will
learn is that strategic planning is nothing to be afraid of.
Strategic planning simply provides a straight forward
series of small steps, with measurable results, that leads to
satisfying outcomes.
Q One of the most frequently asked questions from members
is, " If I attend the ILC, how will it help my lodge succeed? "
What can attendees expect?
A Enthusiasm and excitement are contagious. When
attendees return from the conference and openly share the
concepts and action items discussed, it will have a positive
impact on the lodge and its members.
