For nearly 20 years, Diane and Rodney
Halvorson of Brooklyn Park, Minn.,
have been active in their Sons of Norway
lodge. They enjoy torsk (cod) dinners,
sending their grandchildren to language
camp, organizing galas to benefit homeless
youth and being part of the Norwegian
community.

Both Diane, 69, and Rodney, 70, have
held leadership positions in the lodge
and served as president. At their lodge,
the Halvorsons became friends with FBC
Arlene Mills. " She has such a wonderful
way about her. Her approach suited our
style, " says Diane. " I value her opinion. "
In meeting with Mills, the Halvorsons
discussed how their financial needs changed
as their life changed. They owned and
operated a surveying and engineering
company for 29 years before retiring a few
years ago. " We needed to have insurance,
but not too much, " says Diane.
When their term life policy was about to
end, they converted it to a single premium
whole life policy, which has no ongoing
payments, with the intention of using it to
cover end-of-life needs.
How do I
plan for
retirement?
Securing the future of their family was
also a goal. The Halvorsons bought life
insurance policies on each of their
five grandchildren when they
were infants. " I thought it was

to something for the next
generation, " says Diane.
