Magnifi cent Ship Tunnel
Centuries of Norwegian travelers
have avoided the Stadhavet Sea; even
the Vikings used to drag their ships
onshore rather than risk their lives on
the Stad. But after more than 100 years
of discussion, the Norwegian Coastal
Administration released plans for the
world's fi rst full-scale ship tunnel. The
1.7 km-long Stad Ship Tunnel will run
through the mountains and across the
Stad Peninsula, where between 70 and
120 ships will be able to pass through
daily, avoiding troublesome wind,
currents and waves. The plans include
a bridge over the southern access,
from which observers may watch the
ships as they travel through the tunnel.
Construction will likely start in 2019.
