MATERIALS & TOOLS:
Na tural, tan, or oatmeal-colored
cloth placemats
Measuring tape or ruler
Pencil
1-inch-wide painter's tape
Small, sharp scissors
Sponge brush
Fabric paint: red, white and navy blue
Cl ean rag, pillowcase, or pressing
cloth
Ironing board
Iron
1 Lay out a placemat on a flat work
surface. Use the measuring tape
to measure the width of the place
mat and make a small pencil mark
one-third of the way across. This
is the center of your vertical stripe.
Measure the height of the placemat,
and make a small pencil mark exactly
halfway up. This is the center of your
horizontal stripe.
2 Place two pieces of tape on the
place mat vertically, the first 1 ½
inches to the left of the pencil mark,
the second 1 ½ inches to the right.
The space between them should be
3 inches wide. Place two pieces of
tape on the placemat horizontally,
the first 1 ½ inches above the pencil
mark, the second 1 ½ inches below.
Using the scissors, carefully cut out
the places where the tape strips
overlap so that you have a large cross
on your placemat. Using the sponge
brush, paint the area between the
pieces of tape red. After you are done
painting, remove the tape before the
paint dries. Allow the paint to dry
completely before moving on.
3 Repeat step 2, placing all of the
tape pieces ½ inch closer to the center
of the stripes than before. The space
between them should be 2 inches
wide. Paint the area between the
tape white. Leave the tape in place
this time, allow the paint to dry, then
paint another coat. Remove the tape
and allow the paint to dry completely
before moving on.
4 Repeat step 3, placing all of the
tape pieces ½ inch closer to the center
of the stripes than before. The space
between them should be 1 inch wide.
Paint the area between the tape blue.
As soon as you are done painting,
remove the tape and allow the paint
to dry completely. Repeat with the
remaining placemats.
5 When the placemats are
completely dry, cover them with a
clean rag, pillowcase, or pressing cloth,
and press them with a hot iron on the
cotton setting, without steam, to set
the paint. Launder gently and only as
needed. Spot clean when possible.
