Generous Donations Boost Scholarship Opportunities
As members of Sons of Norway, we all know that helping others is particularly satisfying and unifies us as a fraternal
society. The Foundation is thrilled to honor the donors who created the following endowed funds, which increased
our scholarship opportunities from seven to 11 in 2017.
} The Bernt Anker Scholarship is our first four-year award that will provide up to $3,000 per year to three
different students. The fund's namesake, Mr. Anker, is a long time Sons of Norway member who cares deeply about
those who need help the most and prefers his scholarship to be awarded to
candidates without parents.
} The Orel and Marie Winjum Memorial Scholarship has been a labor
of love for its donors who have faithfully paid on a pledge for many years to
bring it to the endowed level. It is our first scholarship that is open to both
students of Norwegian or German heritage. Also as the Winjums were firm
believers in life-long learning, adult applicants are highly encouraged to
apply for up to a $2,000 award.
} In June 2016 the delegates of District Six voted to create the first
ever district endowment fund named the District Six, Sons of Norway,
Educational Fund. This endowment will be used specifically to support
students from their district to attend college. District leadership will
determine their scholarship selection committee, accept applications
and award the scholarships while the Foundation handles compliance,
investments and logistics.

} Desert Fjord Lodge, 6-133, invested a bequest received from a dedicated member to create the Desert Fjord
Lodge and Agnes Stieler Education Fund. This opportunity will allow members of Desert Fjord to apply for
educational class grants to learn skills associated with Norwegian culture and heritage. The fund will also provide
college scholarships for their members - the first lodge to do either through the Foundation. Desert Fjord will keep
their scholarship and grant selection committee intact while the Foundation manages details.
These benefactors truly appreciate our focus on Nordic culture and emphasis on finding scholarship recipients with
strong character and leadership, making our partnerships ideal. If you have ever been a scholarship or grant recipient,
you understand how much support from philanthropy can change your life. We cannot thank these donors enough for
their generosity.

to take class(es) in Norway, including at Oslo
International Summer School.
Grant Changes in 2018
« Local Lodge Partnership Grant: Will merge
with the former General Heritage and Culture
Grant for grants to lodges only.
« Community Partnership Grant: Open to
non-members of Sons of Norway and limited
to a certain number of awards per year.
