Celebrate Our Foundation
ach year I look forward to October because it is when we shine a
spotlight on the Sons of Norway Foundation. During this month we
take time to recognize the important role the Foundation plays in
our organization, the difference it makes for our youth, our lodges and our
communities, and the benefi t it provides to us, the members.
The Sons of Norway Foundation was founded in 1966 to support
research and the study of Norwegian heritage and culture. In the years since,
the Foundation's involvement has expanded to include a wide range of
scholarships and grants. Each year I am amazed at
the outstanding programming that is funded that
not only benefi ts our lodges, but contributes to their
communities as well. I am also immensely proud of
the help that we give our young people to pursue
their educational dreams through our scholarship
opportunities. (Meet some of our scholarship
recipients, beginning on page 20.)
While our Foundation provides a
lot, I know that there continues to be
many more requests for funding and
applications for scholarships than
funds available. As a result, the
Foundation's director and Board of
Governors work very hard to expand
the number and size of the awards
that can be made. Through their
efforts, this coming year the Foundation
is offering a new grant to promote lodge
vitality, a new scholarship for adult learners
and a grant to encourage community
involvement in promoting Nordic culture
and heritage.
Your donations and those from our
lodges have helped our Foundation grow,
and I want to thank you for your support.
But, please consider doing more. Legacy
giving, featured on page 12, not only will help
the Foundation expand, but will give you the
opportunity to support what you value about
our organization long into the future.

vert år gleder jeg meg til oktober
fordi det er da vi setter Sons of
Norways Foundation i søkelyset. I løpet
av måneden tar vi oss tid til å anerkjenne
den viktige rollen som Foundation
spiller i foreningen vår, forskjellen den
bringer til våre ungdommer, lodger og
lokalsamfunn, og alle fordelene vi som
medlemmer får fra den.
Stiftelsen som heter Sons of Norway
Foundation ble grunnlagt i 1966 for å
støtte forskning og studier av norsk arv
og kultur. Siden den gang har stiftelsen
utvidet seg til å omfatte et bredt spekter
av stipender og donasjoner. Hvert år
blir jeg forbauset over det fremragende
utvalget ov fi nansierte programtilbud
som ikke bare er formålstjenelig for
lodgene, men som også bidrar til
lokalsamfunnene forøvrig. Jeg er også
utrolig stolt av den støtten vi gir til
ungdommen slik at de kan realisere
sine studiedrømmer gjennom våre
stipendmuligheter. (Møt noen av våre
stipendmottakere på side 20.)
Selv om Foundation gir mye støtte
vet jeg at det fortsatt er mange fl ere
forespørsler om fi nansiell støtte og
stipendsøknader enn det er midler til
rådighet. Derfor arbeider Foundations
leder og Styret iherdig med å utvide
antallet og størrelsen på beløpene som
kan tildeles. Gjennom denne innsatsen
skal stiftelsen fra og med neste år
tilby en ny stønad for å stimulere
lodgevitaliteten, opprette et nytt stipend
for voksenopplæring og tilby støtte for
å oppmuntre til større engasjement i
lokalsamfunnene hvor hensikten er å
fremme nordisk kultur og arv.
