SERIES 7 CHAIR
Introduced in 1955, the Series 7 Chair is
one of the most recognized chairs in the
world. It's the brainchild of Scandinavian
architect and designer Arne Jacobsen.
When he needed a chair for his studio,
Jacobsen bought one made of plywood.
Then, he wanted to improve it by
pressure-molding the wood.
Narrowed in the middle with three
bends, the chair is an ideal shape that
contours the body. The back offers the
right amount of support for the upper
body and a waterfall seat supports the
legs. It embodies style and practicality.
The Series 7 Chair is light, stackable and
suits a variety of spaces, from dining
rooms to offices.
FAROE ISLAND SWEATER
In the Faroe Islands-an archipelago
situated between Iceland and Norway-
knitting is a way of life. The word " Faroe "
derives from the Old Norse word for
" sheep island, " which is fitting since
sheep outnumber people on the islands.
These woolly animals play a significant
role in the area's culture and knitwear
industry.
Faroese knitting is some of the best in
the world, often done by women at home
using traditions that are handed down
from generation to generation. Different
islands, towns and villages have their
own patterns. Not only are the patterns
used for decoration, they make the
sweaters more durable and better able to
insulate. Why is Faroese wool so special?
It contains more lanolin (wax or grease
from the sheep) than lamb's wool, which
makes it waterproof and warm.
In 2007, Faroese sweaters had a
fashion moment when Detective Sarah
Lund in the Danish television series " The
Killing " donned a modern version of the
traditional Faroese fisherman's star-motif
sweater by local company Guðrun &
Guðrun. The sweater became the talk of
the show's plotline and a major export for
the Faroe Islands.
HEART-SHAPED WAFFLES
Scandinavians love to serve waffles any time of day. They
can be a sweet treat with coffee or topped with savory
ingredients for lunch or dinner. Recipes vary, but base
ingredients often include flour, sugar, butter and eggs,
as well as Nordic spices such as cardamom, cloves and
ginger. There is a strong connection between waffles and
Norwegian Seaman's Churches (Sjømannskirken). The
churches were originally a home away from home for
Norwegian sailors in America. Heart waffles have been
served to sailors to share hjertevarme, a warm heart, as
part of the church's ministry.
Why hearts? Food historians speculate that the shape
has to do with the Virgin Mary. Waffles were eaten for the
Feast of Annunciation, the day when the Angel Gabriel
visited the Virgin to tell her she would give birth to Christ.
Annunciation Day, historically observed on March 25, is
also International Waffle Day.
