2012. With Wanggaard acting as
project manager, the team spent the
next six years conducting surveys of the
wreckage and carefully raising Maud
from the seabed to make repairs.
In the summer of 2017, Maud was
finally ready to begin the trek across
the Atlantic. With the help of a barge
and tugboat, the ship was first towed
through the same Northwest Passage
as navigated by Amundsen on the
way to Greenland. Wanting to avoid
the tricky ice conditions and stormy
weather that plagued the first part of
their journey, the crew kept Maud in
Greenland until spring brought warmer
temperatures. " The challenges were
many, " Wanggaard says, " but we didn't
hurry, and it was the same people in it
from beginning to end. That was a key
factor. We did this because we wanted
to do it, and we were given the time we
needed to do it our way. "
After one more short break in
Iceland, Maud reached the coast of
Norway in early August, participating
in a homecoming tour of sorts-with
stops in Bergen, Stavanger, Farsund,
Kristiansand, Arendal, Larvik and
Horten-before reaching Vollen on
Aug. 18, 2018. " It was a great relief
after many years of hard work with
a degree of risk in the high Arctic, "
Wanggaard says, " and the reception
was great when we arrived. "
The homecoming marks the
beginning of a new generation of
Norwegians learning about and
celebrating Maud's historic and cultural
significance, but it also answers the
question of whether or not the ship
would ever see its birthplace again. As
boat builder Jensen once questioned:
" Will she ever return to [Vollen]? Have
we seen her here for the last time?
Many ships have come to rest in the
great Arctic graveyard-the silent
Polar Sea. But Arctic exploration and
exploitation of the Arctic resources
have never ceased. In spite of hardships,
frost and hunger, courageous men have
followed the call of the white north and
returned to the Arctic seas even if life be
at stake. "
Now, Jensen, Amundsen and his
expedition crew can rest, knowing
Maud has safely returned home.
