oldest constitution still maintaining and
managing the foundations of the sovereign
state. Little did Washington, Franklin,
Hamilton, Madison and the other
founding fathers in Philadelphia know
of their political influence worldwide.
The ideas of universal rights, intellectual
freedoms and the division of power in
society spread across the Atlantic.
In 1814, Norwegian constitutional
delegates looked to American documents,
such as the constitution, the Declaration
of Independence and the Bill of Rights,
for inspiration in drafting Norway's
constitution. The early history of the
" Enlightened Empire of Liberty " in
America was well known in Norway in
1814.
Norway and the United States had
the same purpose for their constitutions:
freedom and political representation,
rooted in the fundamental principles of
popular sovereignty and the separation
of powers. In his draft, Christian Magnus
Falsen wanted a national assembly
modeled on the American Congress with
its division into two chambers, the House
of Representatives (Odelsting) and the
Senate (Lagting).

Understanding the Differences
Although there are similarities between
the constitutions, the time frames were
very different. In Norway, the revolution
and a war broke out between Norway
and Sweden. Norway lost the war, but a »

An hour north of Oslo is Norway's museum of
constitutional history, Eidsvoll 1814. The museum
encompasses the historic Eidsvoll House, a park,
museum shop and café. Make sure to visit the
basement, where period-costume guides bake
bread at the open hearth and describe day-to-day
life at the manor.
The Wergeland House Democracy Center
is a place for everyone, including children, to
explore Norway's democratic history. Visitors
can see the portraits, diaries and letters of the
Eidsvollsmen, turn the pages of a large copy of
Norway's constitution and watch a film about
