WHERE TO EAT
Norway is a world leader when it
comes to drinking coffee, so you'd be
hard-pressed to leave Bergen without
indulging in a cup of the " black gold, "
as they call it. Start your day at Det
Lille Kaffekompaniet (The Little Coffee
Company), situated on a cobblestone
street in one of the city's alleyways.
Get there early, as customers have been
known to stand in line for an hour or
more. But with dozens of bean varieties
from all over Norway in stock, it's
worth the wait.
When you're ready to take a
break from sightseeing, Godt Brød's
(godtbrod.no) multiple locations
throughout Bergen make the " Good
Bread " eatery a convenient stop for
lunch. Fill up with a sandwich and
salad, then grab a couple of treats to
satisfy your late-afternoon cravings,
such as the apple cake, browies,
cinnamon buns and sunflower bread.
Bergen's location on the waterfront
means an abundance of fresh seafood,
a fact that chef Christopher Haatuft
had in mind when he coined the term
" Neo-Fjordic cuisine " (see the August
issue of Viking for more on this concept).
At his restaurant Lysverket (lysverket.no),
he serves up dishes like grilled mussels,
sturgeon and roasted scallops-all of
which you can also find at the indooroutdoor
Fish Market, a fishermen's trade
hotspot since the 1200s.
If you're looking for something a little
more casual, Pingvinen (pingvinen.no)
is oft-recommended. You'll fit in with
locals who frequent the " Penguin " pub
while noshing on traditional Norwegian
comfort food (think hearty meatballs
and stews).
