Dugnad: More Than Volunteer Work
A
s we move swiftly toward another change of seasons, it's a great time
to borrow a page from the Norwegian playbook and lend a hand for
the common good. A central part of Norwegian culture is the tradition
of dugnad. Although it's diffi cult to translate the full meaning and signifi cance
of the word, dugnad can be roughly summed up as a day when people gather
voluntarily to socialize and work together to benefi t their communities.
In this context, a community might be a neighborhood, school, sports team,
apartment complex, workplace or anything else that brings people together
around a common cause, location or activity. Each community organizes its own
dugnads-often once or twice a year, corresponding to the change of seasons. As a
result, it's common for people to participate in several dugnads per year.
Dugnads often center around the outdoor manual labor that is needed to
maintain common areas in a community, such as raking leaves,
weeding, picking up litter, painting or making small repairs.
However, it's not just about getting the work done. It's also
about coming together and deepening connections within
the community, and the tradition dates back centuries.
Historically, dugnads were used to accomplish big tasks like
building barns or harvesting crops. Everyone pitched in to
help their neighbors, and they received help in turn as
the need arose.
Traditionally, the day of hard work was followed by a
feast and celebration. Today, that often takes the form
of a barbecue or other gathering for refreshments,
where participants can unwind, have fun together
and enjoy the shared sense of accomplishment.
This spring, I encourage you to learn more about
the tradition of dugnad and fi nd ways to adapt it
for your lodge, as well as any other communities
you belong to. Does your lodge parking lot need to
be patched or repaved after another winter's worth of
potholes? Could the walls use a fresh coat of paint? Are
there members of your community who need help with
yardwork or other maintenance?
Ask around and see what needs to be done in your
community, then organize a day to jump in and lend a
hand-and don't forget to celebrate afterward. You'll be
amazed what you can accomplish together, and you just
might have a new tradition on your hands!

det vi raskt nærmer oss en ny årstid, er dette
en utmerket anledning til å følge den norske
sedvanen om å gi en hjelpende hånd i lokalsamfunnet.
En sentral del av norsk kultur er
dugnadstradisjonen. Selv om det er vanskelig
å beskrive ordets fulle betydning, kan dugnad
grovt oppsummeres som en dag der folk kommer
sammen med andre på frivillig basis og utfører
nyttige arbeidsoppgaver i lokalsamfunnet.
Et lokalsamfunn i denne sammenheng kan
være et nabolag, skole, idrettslag, leilighetskompleks,
arbeidsplass eller andre steder hvor mennesker
samler seg rundt en felles interesse, aktivitet
eller område. Hvert lokalsamfunn organiserer
sine egne dugnader-ofte en eller to ganger i året
i forbindelse med endringer i årstiden. Derfor er
det vanlig at folk deltar på fl ere dugnader i året.
Dugnader fokuserer ofte på manuelt arbeid
som utføres utendørs i forbindelse med vedlikehold
av fellesområder, som å rake løv, luke
ugress, plukke opp søppel, male, eller utføre små
reparasjoner. Men det er ikke bare om å gjøre å få
unnagjort arbeidet. Det handler også om å treffe
andre mennesker og styrke båndene i lokalsamfunnet,
og denne tradisjonen kan dateres tilbake
hundrevis av år. Historisk sett ble dugnader brukt
til å utføre store oppgaver som å bygge fjøs eller
høste avlinger. Alle bidro for å hjelpe sine naboer,
og fi kk til gjengjeld hjelp når de selv trengte det.
Tradisjonelt ble den harde dugnadsdagen
etterfulgt av fest og feiring. I dag er det ofte en
grillfest eller andre former for sammenkomster
med forfriskninger der deltakerne kan slappe
av, ha det gøy sammen og nyte den fi ne fellesfølelsen
etter utført jobb.
Nå som våren er her oppfordrer jeg dere til
å lære mer om dugnadstradisjonen og fi nne ut
hvordan det kan tilpasses i lodgen din og i andre
lokale grupper du tilhører. Trenger dere å reparere
eller legge ny asfalt på parkeringsplassen etter at
vinteren har dannet groper? Kan veggene trenge
et strøk med ny maling? Er det folk i nabolaget
ditt som trenger hjelp med hagestell eller annet
vedlikehold?
Spør folk hva som kan gjøres i lokalsamfunnet,

og organiser en dag dere kan bidra med en hjelpende
hand. Og glem ikke feiringen etterpå. Dere
kommer til å bli gledelig overrasket over hvor
mye man kan oppnå sammen, og kanskje blir det
starten på en ny tradisjon!
