Akershus Fortress
While today Akershus Fortress is often
used as a venue for cultural events and
ceremonies, it wasn't always a positive
experience visiting the 700-plus-year-old
building. Built under King Haakon V's reign
in 1299 as an effort to protect Oslo-which
it did quite well; the city was never once
seized by a foreign enemy-Akershus
also served as a prison and later as an
execution site during World War II.
Squeeze through narrow hallways on
Oslo Cathedral
Oslo Cathedral has been a prominent landmark since construction wrapped
up in 1697, but it wasn't the first church for the capital. Originally there was St.
Hallvard's, which fell into disrepair when King Christian IV moved the city closer
to Akershus Fortress
following the fire
of 1624. After the
second church,
Hellig Trefoldighet,
burned down, its
current successor-
then called Our
Savior's Church-was
erected.
Over the past
300-plus years, Oslo
Cathedral has gone
through a handful of
renovations, such as
the addition of ceiling murals, stained-glass windows and a chapel. As the main
house of worship for the Church of Norway, it hosts many of the monarchy's
big events, both joyous and somber. King Olav V and Crown Princess Märtha
were two recent royals to have their funerals here, while King Harald V and
Prince Haakon exchanged " I dos " with Queen Sonja and Princess Mette-Marit,
respectively, within its historic walls.

WHEN TO GO: Oslo Cathedral is open to the public year-round, and you can
even attend a mass if you wish.
WHILE YOU'RE THERE: Drive the 10 minutes from the cathedral to Oslo
Ladegård (oslo.kommune.no). In the summer, you can tour the barn that
was used to secure supplies for nearby Akershus Fortress, learn more about
what life was like in medieval Norway and see the ruins from the city's first
cathedral, St. Hallvard's.

the tours that take visitors past prison
cells, residential rooms once occupied
by kings, the onsite church and even the
Royal Mausoleum. Many of Norway's
monarchs-think King Haakon VII, Queen
Maud, King Olav V and Crown Princess
Märtha-are buried here. Akershus is also
the home to two museums: the Armed
Forces Museum and the Norwegian
Resistance Museum.

WHILE YOU'RE THERE: Take a break
from touring and visit Festningen
(festningenrestaurant.no), a restaurant
inside the fortress that serves up dishes
like pan-fried scallops, beef tartare and
cherry crumble.
