Painting Is

Norwegian artist
Edvard Munch is
known for his famous
1893 painting, " The
Scream. " The iconic
piece features a
central fi gure who
appears to be caught
by surprise, with a
fl uid landscape of
water and sky in the
background. Once
bright and vivid,
some colors are
now fading.
In an effort to
recover the original imagery, researchers at New York City's Scientifi c
Analysis of Fine Art (SAFA) lab and experts from Oslo's Munch
Museum started examining the canvas in 2012. Using x-rays, laser
beams and electron microscopes, the team found small crystals
forming on the painting where the colors had faded, indicating a
degradation of the paint layers-the pigments in the paint have
begun to break down.
Fortunately, scientists and historians were able to study the paint
tubes used by Munch, giving them a better idea of what the painting
looked like when it was fi rst made. Researchers hope to recreate the
original colors digitally and display them for viewers by projecting
them over the art piece.

Designed for youth ages 10 to 15, the Biblo Tøyen in Oslo,
Norway, is one of a kind. During planning, youth in focus
groups expressed their desire for a place where they
could get inspired and be themselves.
This idea has now come to life at the library, home
to Norway's largest collection of youth books. Exciting
activities like cooking classes, fi lm screenings and
workshops are available free of charge. Meanwhile, fun
learning opportunities like computer programming, 3D
printing, drama and music ensure every visitor will fi nd
something to enjoy.
Brimming with charm and wonder, the space features
comfy couches, a repurposed ski gondola and a red Volvo
truck (transformed into an interactive kitchen), while
fl oating bookshelves add an element of weightlessness.
Since much of the furniture can be easily moved around,
the center's versatility and its possibilities for creativity
really are endless.
