NordicLife Culture + Taste + History + Events + Personalities The Maestro's Next Big Move In August, the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra welcomed a new chief conductor and artistic advisor, Klaus Mäkelä. He grew up in a musical family, and after singing in the children's choir at the Finnish National Opera and Ballet at the age of 7, Mäkelä knew he wanted to be a conductor. He went on to study conducting at the Sibelius Academy- one of the largest music institutes in Europe. Today, the 24-year-old is a talented cellist and conductor, working with orchestras around the world. Mäkelä says he is excited about his new 7-year position with the Oslo Philharmonic, an internationally renowned symphony orchestra that has been around since 1919. It currently has more than 100 musicians and performs 60-70 concerts in Oslo each year.
