Looking Back
This ornate Sons of Norway gavel is about 100
years old and bears the name of famous Oslo
silversmith David Anderson. Anderson had a heart
for his employees and fellow tradespeople, setting
up a pension fund for goldsmiths and employing
92 men and 29 women in 1899. Viking magazine
featured an interview with a fi fth-generation
descendant of Anderson's in June 2012.
Norway is home to more than 1,000 fjords-the deepest (Sognefjord) is 4,291 feet below sea level.
New Bridge Opens Over Vøringsfossen Waterfall

HOLMENKOLLEN
On a mountain above the city of Oslo towers
Holmenkollen ski jump, home to the oldest ski museum
in the world. More than 4,000 years of ski and snowboard
history and polar exploration artifacts are housed in the
museum, which is open 365 days a year. Visitors can
enjoy panoramic views of Oslo from the observation
deck on top of the jump tower. Other exhibitions include
Blåkollen, where children can play and climb with
gnomes and trolls, and " Be Prepared, " an exhibition
about weather and climate changes in partnership with
the Norwegian Meteorological Institute. Since 1892, many
events have been held at the ski jump itself, and it is
regarded as a major landmark in the skiing world. It has
been rebuilt on multiple occasions, most recently for the
2011 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships.

At 182 meters high, Vøringsfossen is one of the best-known
waterfalls in Norway-and now tourists can experience the natural
phenomenon up close. On Aug. 21, 2020, a staircase bridge
opened to the public. From the overpass, visitors can see the
whole gorge and into the Måbødalen valley from the 99th and
fi nal step. The new bridge is a part of the Nasjonal Turistveier
project, combining unconventional architecture with the beauty
of nature. Designed by architect Carl-Viggo Hølmebakk, the
overpass was assembled in seven parts and spans 47 meters, with
a height of 16 meters. Although the tourism industry is happy to
increase its visitors in rural areas, critics say that nature should be
experienced unaltered, and the utmost care should be taken with
a national icon as important as the waterfall.
