THE BASICS
An iceboat is a sailboat equipped with three runners (a.k.a. skates), which
are thin blades that glide across the surface of the ice. The approximately
40-feet-long, steel structures are powered only by wind, and can glide up
to four times as fast as the wind thrusting it. They've been known to hit
speeds of more than 140 mph (220 km/h), but in order to sail they need
the ice to be nearly spotless of snow.
In competitions, courses are typically 15 to 20 miles long and triangular
so that they include a couple turns. Each iceboat is piloted by one or two
crew members, who distribute themselves to best balance the boat based
on the wind's direction.

Also called ice yachting, this winter sport has been growing in popularity
with Norwegians. But that doesn't mean it's new. While there are
indications that it may have been around since 2000 BC in Scandinavia,
there's proof from the 17th century that the Dutch used iceboating to
transport goods across the Netherlands' canals. Its history as a sport didn't
crop up until the Poughkeepsie Ice Yacht Club started up in 1865.

DID YOU KNOW?
Iceboats are actually faster when they travel across the wind rather than
with it. That's because, from the velocity of their own movement, the
vessels produce gusts that assist the existing, natural wind.
