In addition, Tuft eland leads a Viking living history
and reenactment group called Hrafngarðr, which is
sponsored by Bothell Lodge. While the two activities
diff er from each another, Tuft eland sees them both
as recruitment tools. " Both outlets help connect us
to potential members, " he says. " The radio show has
a broad audience and getting to talk to the public at
events as a Viking helps draw their attention. "
While talking to a Viking might be an eye-catching
way to attract new members, Tuft eland says that
personal interactions about the benefi ts of Sons of
Norway membership and involvement in Nordic
heritage can be just as meaningful. " We don't have
a specifi c plan for recruitment, we just encourage
our members to talk to people about the benefi ts of
membership, " he says. " That goes a long way. "

How do you grow a lodge in a town of about
450 people? For Møllargutten lodge 4-478 in Maddock,
North Dakota, the answer lies in investing in the
community around you. " We're so far from any of
the big cities that it's really hard for people to come
here, so we try to listen to hear what other people
have available, " says the lodge's cultural director, Carol
Thompson. " I think maybe that's helping us out a lot,
that we're taking from our local resources. "
In her leadership role, Thompson actively focuses on
fi nding a variety of unique Nordic cultural activities to
connect with community members of all backgrounds.
" We try to keep it interesting, " Thompson explains.
" We have little sub-groups. We have a knitting group.
We also have a wood
carving group because
we wanted to get some
guys involved. " Lodge
cultural activities also
include more traditional
Norwegian activities,
including carving
primstaver, chip carving,
folk dancing, hardanger
embroidery, rosemaling
and more.
