FAVORITE BITES AND SIPS
Each time we visit Oslo, there are plenty of
new restaurants we are eager to visit, but we
also have a few favorites that we return to
again and again. For us, no trip to Oslo is
complete without a visit to Katla, a restaurant
named for the volcano in Iceland. Chef Atli
Mar Yngvasson is Icelandic, and his food is
explosive (volcanic, even!) in flavor. Drop by
the food bar for fried chicken, steam buns,
frozen yuzu margaritas and natural wine.
Or, go all-in on the tasting menu in the main
dining room if you want the full experience.
Katla is our all-time favorite Oslo restaurant.
Another place we love to revisit is
Arakataka. The signature spaghetti topped
with løyrom (vendace roe) is worth a visit
alone! This is another place where you can
have snacks and wine in the food bar, or a
tasting menu in the dining room.
If you're a natural wine lover, there's no
better place to quench your thirst than at
Skaal Matbar. Sit back, relax, and let Fridtjof
Seeberg (one of the world's most entertaining
restaurant hosts) fill your glasses and your
bellies. The food here is simple and designed
for drinking. Our favorite bites are the layered
potato " fries " with whipped crème fraîche and
dill oil, and the grilled cheese with cheddar
and jalapeños.
One restaurant that still flies a bit under
the radar in the Oslo food scene is restaurant
Hyde. Don't be fooled by the casual, low-key
setting, or the loud music at this hyde-away-
the high level of food here will surprise you.
The menu changes often, but a signature dish
is the potato cake topped with smoked eel,
pickled cherry and chives. Hyde is an industry
hangout and a favorite among foodies in Oslo.
SIMPLY SCANDINAVIAN
If it's simple Scandinavian fare you're after, try
restaurant Hot Shop, which is run by chef Jo
Bøe Klakegg who previously worked at Noma.
The menu here changes seasonally as well, but
on a recent visit we loved the courgettes with
oyster cream and bleak roe and the sourdough
bread with thyme butter. After your meal,
drop in to Dæl, the cocktail bar next door,
for a Parmesan-infused Bloody Mary, a
Turmeric Yuzu Sour, a Darjeeling Daiquiri or
a Lingonberry Cosmo. These are some of the
most creative cocktails in Oslo!

Another favorite cocktail bar of ours in Oslo
is located in the lobby of the Amerikalinjen
Hotel. But whether you're a guest of the
hotel or not, you need to stop by Pier 42
for a drink. The bartenders have created an
incredible selection of drinks inspired by
important historical events in Norway and
America between 1919 and 2019. Our favorite
is the " Emigration " cocktail, which is made
with rooibos tea, citrus, and lemongrass,
and is served inside a globe. We also love the
" XVII Olympic Games, " which is made with
Absolut Elyx, sea buckthorn and passionfruit.
A COFFEE MECCA
Oslo is home to some of the world's best coffee
roasters and award-winning baristas. It's
the coffee mecca of Scandinavia, due to the
influence of pioneers like Tim Wendelboe,
Norway's most internationally acclaimed
barista. His small and elegantly-designed
coffee bar in Grünerløkka is a tourist
destination for coffee lovers from all over the
world. There is nowhere in town where you
get a more consistent quality of coffee, from
espresso-based drinks to hand brews.
Another must-visit coffee shop is Fuglen,
a café by day and cocktail bar by night, with
an emphasis on vintage Scandinavian design.
Most of the interior is originally from the 1950s
or 1960s, and all the furniture and decorations
inside the café are for sale. Last but not least, a
visit to Supreme Roastworks is a must for any
coffee nerd. The owners started roasting coffee
in an old garage before opening their own
shop. Their original location is in Grünerløkka,
but they also have a sleek new café in
collaboration with Porsche in Aker Brygge. ▼
