companies face developing HA/DR
strategies.
Finnes notes that managers often
consider the investment in an HA/DR
solution without calculating the cost
of downtime, particularly downtime
during peak usage hours. HA applies to
the cost of necessary disruptions such
as maintenance and upgrades, as well
as unplanned outages. Taking servers
offline for planned outages is costly.
One challenge that doesn't seem
like a challenge at first glance is the
central focus of design in IBM Power
Systems, and that is the reliability
and resiliency of the platform. Sibley
describes one client that ran its server
for nine years without a single issue.
But when something did eventually go
wrong, it created chaos because the

company was completely unprepared.
Complacency can be a much bigger
challenge than expected, in large
part because human error is always
possible.

Another recent addition to IBM's
HA/DR offerings is IBM VM Recovery
Manager for IBM Power Systems. This
solution features automation software to
restart VMs to a backup environment and
streamlines disaster recovery testing.
Db2 Mirror for i Eliminates Downtime
for Maintenance and Updates
Db2 Mirror for i makes databases
continually available, even during planned
maintenance.
The problem of the cost associated
with planned outages is a widespread
pain point and Db2 Mirror for i has seen
an unusually high adoption rate because
it addresses that very problem.
