Do you get much traffic noise
or external leakage?
No, the only noise problem I have is when the dryer's
running. I just have to not be doing vocals on laundry day.
When designing this space, did you have
a wish list or a pros and cons list?
We had done a studio in our previous home in Waco, TX.
It was like a hundred years old, built by the guy who invented
Dr Pepper. There was an old barn behind the house where we
basically built a studio inside the existing 100-year-old structure.
It was right by downtown, so we had to worry about sound isolation
like crazy and things like that. So from that experience, I had
a list of things I would have done differently if I could do it again.
When we bought and remodeled the Waco house, we
actually did the studio conversion first. I was like, this is
amazing; I have the best wife on the planet ever! But then I
realized her plan was for us to live in the studio area while
we remodeled the house [Laughs].
When we got this new house here in Atlanta, the studio
was the last thing we did. I had a ton of time and opportunity
as the rest of the home was being renovated to plan
the aesthetics and have them fit in line with the rest of the
house-clean, modern and contemporary, but playful.
The studio you see behind me is a reflection of the rest of
the house. I would go online during the planning stage and
type " coolest studios ever. " Then I made a collection of what
I liked and went from there. Of course, as I said, the acoustics
dictated the layout.
So, what things were on your wish list?
One thing I knew I wanted was a synth wall. I love old
analog synths and stuff, and I'm like, " I have to have a synth
wall with everything on and ready, MIDIed up and routed so
I could cut something in Pro Tools or Ableton instantly. "
I have all the audio running into the Universal Audio (UA)
Console app. I have an analog Toft console for preamps
and EQ, and then everything else-compression and all that
stuff-is in the box.
I've already spent time making sure I've got a good input
signal. And all I have to do is go over to the synth wall and
start poking around at something, and we're ready to go.
So, workflow was of utmost importance?
In the previous studio, it was just sort of clunky. I had one
good stereo channel strip, and I'd have to repatch everything
all the time. Then, by the time I'd get a synth up and running,
after a while, I was like, " I didn't find anything in that synth,
so that was a waste of time. " Then I have to repatch another
synth, decide what I want to send it through, and start all
over again. I wanted to eliminate that. I am home for such
a short time. I need my time in the studio to be productive.
