STATE BOARD NEWS
Kansas Offers Online CE
Opportunity
K-TRACS, Kansas' prescription drug
monitoring program (PDMP), is now offering
an online, self-paced education module for
Kansas pharmacists to learn more about
the state's PDMP. The module features an
overview of K-TRACS and how to use it as
a clinical decision-making tool to improve
team-based patient care coordination. Topics
also include high-risk prescribing scenarios
and interprofessional applications for care
coordination. More details, including
continuing education (CE) credit, can be
found on the K-TRACS website at pharmacy
.ks.gov/k-tracs/using-k-tracs/continuing-education.
Nevada to Permit Dispensing
of Self-Administered Hormonal
Contraceptives Without a
Prescription
New legislation in Nevada allows pharmacists
to dispense a self-administered hormonal
contraceptive to patients - under a protocol
established by regulation by the Nevada State
Board of Pharmacy - without a prescription
from a practitioner. Limitations exist on
the quantity of self-administered hormonal
contraceptives that can be dispensed to a
patient, including refills. Protocol details can be
found in the Board's April 2022 Newsletter.
North Carolina Revises Centralized
Pharmacy Services Rule
The North Carolina Board of Pharmacy's
revised centralized pharmacy services
rule expands the availability of remote
medication order processing from the health
system practice setting to all pharmacy
practice settings. Board staff programmed
a registration system for out-of-state
pharmacists who are not licensed in North
Carolina, but who intend to provide remote
medication order entry (RMOE) services
to North Carolina pharmacies through
obtaining an NABP Verify credential.
Pharmacies that have deployed waiver-based
RMOE operations will be provided with a
reasonable time and opportunity to transfer
to rule-based operations.
South Dakota Will Create a
Prescription Repository Program
The South Dakota Legislature passed House
Bill 1086 this session, which, when enacted,
will establish a prescription repository
program for South Dakota patients. The
South Dakota Board of Pharmacy is tasked
with the development and rulemaking of
this program. In addition, the Board will
set up and maintain an electronic database
for prescribers and pharmacies to search for
available inventory that has been donated to
the program and verified by a pharmacist.
Drug repository programs have helped
patients obtain their medications more
quickly, reduce the amount of medication
waste, and save prescription costs.
West Virginia Addresses WV
Pharmacy Workload Study
The West Virginia Pharmacy Workload
Study has concluded with 1,848 individuals
completing all or part of the survey. West
Virginia Pharmacy Workload Task Force
members have been meeting to formulate
recommendations for the West Virginia
Board of Pharmacy to address survey results.
In addition to the work that the Workload
Task Force is doing, the Board is investigating
complaints related to pharmacy workload and
patient safety concerns. Any individual may
make a complaint to the Board concerning a
licensee or registrant. Read more in the Board's
of Pharmacy April 2022 Newsletter.
