Year in Review
he practice of pharmacy - and its regulation - has been characterized by rapid change over the
last 25 years. That change has accelerated over time, but the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)
pandemic certainly served as a catalyst, driving an even more rapid transformation of the
pharmacy landscape. Many long-anticipated developments came to fruition earlier than expected,
particularly as pharmacists' scope of practice expanded. While this is largely good news for the
profession, it cannot be denied that an increased list of responsibilities at a time of high demand for
services has contributed to several significant challenges, including higher levels of burnout among
pharmacists and other pharmacy staff and a resulting staffing shortage affecting many pharmacies
throughout the country.
Facing the winds of change is inevitable, but NABP and its
member boards are holding steady and even embracing the
progress this change represents. Meanwhile, the Association is
taking steps to address the challenges that have arisen. This may
be most evident in the initiative of NABP President Reginald B.
" Reggie " Dilliard, DPh, which is to facilitate a new pharmacy
practice model that enhances and promotes patient safety while
exploring a supportive environment for pharmacy professionals.
More details will be provided at the upcoming 119th
NABP
Annual Meeting. The last year was also a period of recovery
from the COVID-19 pandemic. More meetings and events
moved back to being held in person. Inspections and
accreditations have largely resumed. In this issue of
Innovations, NABP reports on the results and successes of
the previous year for its Clearinghouse, licensure transfer,
examination, accreditation, and inspection programs.
