LETTER FROM THE CHAIRPERSON
Fellow Members,
The Association has been on quite the journey in 2023. We have
been hard at work developing new offerings such as NAPLEX
Advantage and Pulse by NABP™. We conducted the largest and
most inclusive product tracing pilot that has ever been conducted
for the Drug Supply Chain Security Act.

We made important updates to the Multistate
Pharmacy Inspection Blueprint Program and
the Model State Pharmacy Act and Model Rules of
the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy.
And, with the help of the American Pharmacists
Association, American Society of HealthSystem
Pharmacists, and others, we initiated the
" Implementing Solutions Summit: Building a
Sustainable, Healthy, Pharmacy Workforce and
Workplace, " which brought stakeholders from
industry and academia, along with associations,
together to create solutions and pathways to
address working conditions and burnout in our
profession. All of that work has brought us to
this, the final edition of Innovations for 2023.
As you all know, the opioid crisis
continues to be among the most important
issues facing health care regulators in
this country. The feature for this issue of
Innovations is focused on the emergence of a
new trend driving overdose deaths in many
parts of the country: a veterinary sedative
called xylazine being found in combination
with already dangerous opioids like illicit
fentanyl. The article provides a deeper look
at this threat and the steps that regulators
and lawmakers around the country are
taking to respond.
Also in this issue is a brief examination of
how pharmacy technician representation on
boards of pharmacy has increased and what the
potential benefits of those changes may be.
On that note, I want to personally thank
our members who have participated in this
year's task forces and committees. NABP's
task forces are an important part of how
the Association helps you to stay informed
about timely topics and important trends
in pharmacy regulation. They also help set
the direction for NABP and its member
boards by providing recommendations. If
you are a current or past board of pharmacy
representative interested in participating in
future task force meetings or committees,
please submit a volunteer application form
(found on the Members section of the NABP
website) by spring 2024. My colleague,
President-elect Jeffrey J. Mesaros, PharmD,
JD, RPh, will be making appointments for
the 2024-2025 term soon after.
As the chairperson of the Executive
Committee, I also want to take a moment
to offer you best wishes as we approach the
holiday season. There's no doubt that the
challenges we are facing will continue in 2024,
but I know that this Association and our
profession are in good hands thanks to the
dedicated work I've seen put forth by so many
of you. I look forward to continuing to serve as
chairperson as we head into the new year.

This November/December issue serves as the final printed version of Innovations. Digital publications are
more accessible, shareable, and ecofriendly, plus allow us to offer more videos and interactive elements.
