NABP Hosts Surveyors and Inspectors at Annual Workshop
Panel-led discussions included topics such as Unusual Inspection
and Survey Findings and USP Sterile and Nonsterile Compounding
Pearls. Attendee Amanda Harding, PharmD, noted that these
discussions allow people to " hear what other inspectors are seeing,
experiencing, and new trends that are happening. "

On July 22-24, 2024, NABP held its annual workshop for
professionals who perform inspections and accreditation surveys for
NABP at its headquarters in Mount Prospect, IL. The workshop
featured workstation events, panel-led discussions, and various
presentations, featuring an accreditation compliance overview, a new
session on garb and gown requirements for Category 3 compounded
preparations (as noted in United States Pharmacopeia [USP] General
Chapter <797>), and a guest speaker.
The workstations utilized small group discussions and interactive
learning. They covered topics such as durable medical equipment,
prosthetics, orthotics, and supplies; Drug Supply Chain Security Act
definitions and reviews; updates on industry relations; distributor
business models; Verified Pharmacy Program® (VPP®) inspection
trends; and VPP form updates that follow USP compounding chapter
changes. New inspectors for NABP attended a special session on the
art and science of conducting inspections.
To prepare inspectors and surveyors for field work, sessions were
held on how to plan for an inspection or accreditation survey, and VPP
inspectors were able to demonstrate their knowledge of proper gowning
and garbing techniques for entry into a compounding suite. Attendee Paul
Limberis, RPh, expressed his appreciation for these trainings, saying, " [the
trainings] allow us to feel more prepared when going out into the field. "
RPh, BCSCP, FACA, members of USP's Expert Compounding
Committee, spoke on the recent USP compounding chapter
updates and answered inspectors' questions. With the revised USP
compounding chapters going into effect last November, this session
allowed NABP inspectors to hear directly from members of the
committee who helped revise and create the chapters.
This year, NABP staff also gave presentations on topics such
as bulk drug substances, semaglutide, certificate of analysis and
confidentiality, Health Insurance Portability and Accountability
Act (HIPAA), and legal updates. Nancy Hall, inspector, and Gregg
Jones, RPh, compliance senior manager for NABP, spoke on how
semaglutide and tirzepatide are popular diabetes medications used
for weight loss, but fake versions continue to proliferate. This year's
annual HIPAA presentation addressed changes in opioid use disorder
and reproductive health legislation.
NABP's workshop also allows participants to network with one
another on various topics to stay informed on what is happening
with patient care and safety. In addition, attendee Leo R. Blais, RPh,
explained that these trainings and meetings " allow a wide variety
of personnel from different walks of life, so [attendees] can receive
different insights on various topics. "
