THE THINK TANK RESULTS Session 1 There were four primary future themes that emerged from this portion of the think tank discussion and ideation session surrounding student-facing facilities. They included: Flexibility of space Socialization through cultural engagement Community through technology Advocacy and change management FLEXIBILITY OF SPACE The first major insight was that the dining space itself must be designed to be flexible and customizable. There were a variety of strategies suggested concerning the different aspects of the space that should be made flexible and customizable. The first was the ambience of the environment itself. Allowing students to have some measure of control over elements like lighting, music, and what is on the screens will give them agency over their environment, promoting an affinity for the space and making it more personal. The other major consideration in this category was seating. The participants suggested that seating quality versus sheer quantity should be emphasized in dining spaces. In this instance, quality refers to the ability for the seating to be customized by management based on the needs of the meal period, but also by the students so that they can socialize and collaborate easily (if they choose) or isolate if that is what they need at that time. Again, allowing students to control their environment in ways that meets their needs as well as the needs of the organization provides benefits to both. 88
