10 culinary students started and completed
the program, and four culinary students were
promoted to cooks. As UC Davis enters the third
year of the program, the executive chefs look
forward to seeing the seven culinary students of
the class of 2024 advance their careers.
Employee satisfaction
For the 36 career employees and six managers
who work at Latitude Restaurant, UC Davis
wants to provide an atmosphere filled with
positivity, support, and encouragement. The
culinary training program is one of the ways they
help their employees grow. While a pay increase
from the new position is certainly a motivating
factor, UC Davis also wants its employees to be
satisfied with their advancement and learning.
After two successful years of the program, UC
Davis is proud to say that they now have more
cooks who are staying and thriving in their
positions.
The culinary training program not only satisfies
their employees by giving them the foundation
to execute a variety of dishes in a high-paced
environment, but it also teaches them soft skills.
" It helped me work as a team with my colleagues
and listen to my chef's directions, " Uribe said of
his experience.
Sous Chef Emily Cornejo, a teacher of the
program, noted she also observes skills that can
remain with the culinary students throughout
their careers.
" (The program) gives them knowledge that
they can apply to their daily lives, " Cornejo said.
" They have a greater understanding of food as
culture, art, and health. They also learn passion,
leadership, time management, multitasking,
communication, discipline, dealing with highpressure
situations, professionalism, and
reliability. "
Having satisfied employees with the skills
to succeed also enhances UC Davis's dining
operations. Good cooks lead to better food and
better recipes. UC Davis is honored to have so
many cooks who are passionate about food
and focused on customer service. UC Davis will
continue to invest in its employees and create an
environment where everyone can succeed.

" Year over year, " Becerra said, " We will continue to make
improvements and adjustments based on the feedback from the
culinary team who work with the graduates daily. Our goal is to
expand the training to additional positions in the upcoming year. "
It's not only the culinary students who benefit from the program but
the instructors as well.
Thompson's favorite part about the program is " watching the passion
for food and cooking be ignited in the culinary students, " he said,
" As well as refreshing the fire for myself and my instructor team. It's
wonderful to remember why I started cooking all those years ago. " §
